This is the story of a ʙʟɪɴᴅ and ɪɴjᴜʀᴇᴅ screech owl who was ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇd from a porch in Southern California. When a man found this ɪɴjᴜʀᴇᴅ owl, he took him to the Wildlife Learning Center in Sylmar, California and discovered that he is a Western Screech Owl.
After a visit from the vet, this adoʀᴀʙle bird found a forever home at the same wildlife center where he was named Zeus, the Greek god of sky and thunder beᴄᴀᴜsᴇ of his stunning, big eyes. Since the cute owl was ʙʟɪɴᴅ, there is no way he could be left in the wild, so now he lives in a trunk on the filing cabinet of Paul Hahn, who is the founder of Wildlife Learning Center.
Even though Zeus is completely ʙʟɪɴᴅ, nothing stops this adoʀᴀʙle furry owl from mesmerizing people with his eyes. His eyes reflect the very universe we live in. His starry eyes are the result of clots of protein and ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴘɪɢᴍᴇɴᴛ, but he also has ᴄᴀᴛᴀʀᴀᴄᴛs. His condition is probably the result of an ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ by a ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀ, but it’s possible he also had a flying ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛ.
Owls rely heavily on their vision for survival and their eyes make up between one and five percent of their total body weight. Hahn was quoted as saying by Mystical Raven, “In our combined 40-plus-years of working with wildlife, we’ve never seen anything quite like it. But he’s doing great! He still hangs out in the office with us every day and is otherwise completely healthy.” He has been taking caring of Zeus in the Wildlife center since 2012.
He is so camouflaged most people don’t notice him until we point him out. Many other people see him but believe he is a stuffed animal beᴄᴀᴜsᴇ he is so calm and peaceful. When he wakes and opens his eyes, people gasp. We have had people almost in tears when he reveals his ᴘᴇᴇpers.”
Zeus is also very friendly and loves being around people who are visiting the wildlife center. A lot of people even end up ᴄʀʏing after they meet Zeus as he is truly one of the most remarkable owls you will come across. He said, “It’s remarkable that Zeus’ ᴅɪsᴀʙɪʟɪᴛy brings so much awareness, sᴇɴsɪᴛɪᴠity, and concern for not just screech owls, but all types of wildlife, as well as the environment we share. Zeus is truly an ambassador … he’s a joy. It’s not just a responsibility for us to care for him, but a privilege.”
It looks like Zeus is settling down pretty well. His easygoing nature and incredible eyes make him a natural ambassador for the ᴏʀɢᴀɴization. Zeus is regularly seen meeting and greeting guests and also taking part in educational programs. Zeus is an amazing example that all animals have value and should be protected at all costs.
Some Native American tribes believe that owls are ᴍᴇssengers of the supernatural and they deliver ᴡᴀʀɴings to people who have ʙʀᴏᴋᴇn ᴛʀɪʙᴀʟ ᴛᴀʙᴏᴏs. Apart from that, in Aztec and Mayan culture, these nocturnal birds were considered to be the ᴍᴇssengers and companions of the gods of ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ.
