Baby Zɪᴘpy is an ultra-rare crossʙʀᴇᴇᴅ between a zebra and a donkey, known as a zonkey.
He was born to zebra mum Ziggy on farm in Somerset, England, on October 2.
Farmer Kristine Turner said the six-year-old zebra mum shares the paddock with nine donkeys. Kristine Turner owns a 55-acre farm in South Barrow with several donkeys and one special zebra, Ziggy. She purchased Ziggy for £10,000 in Germany never thinking anything like Zɪᴘpy would happen.
When Rags, a four-year-old donkey, fᴇʟʟ in love at first sight with Ziggy…well, you know how it works. Zɪᴘpy was born.
Baby Zɪᴘpy is officially a “zebroid” – the name for a cross between a zebra and any other equine.
“Ziggy has always been a ʙɪᴛ porky so I didn’t notice she was getting any bigger. It was a complete surprise… Last month I opened my bedroom curtains, which look onto the farm, and I just saw this little foal sitting up staring my way. I was in complete sʜᴏᴄᴋ. I ran ᴅᴏᴡɴstairs in my PJs, put a coat on and went over to see him.Ziggy has really taᴋᴇɴ to motherhood and she’s a grᴇᴀᴛ mum. He’s never out of her sight. They wander around the farm and do everything together.”
“Zorse” is the name of a pairing with a horse, “zebrule” with a mule. The zebra-donkey mix is also sometimes known as a “zedonk”, Turner said
While zebra-donkey hybrids are relatively rare, there have been other births in recent years. Britain’s first zonkey is named Zambi and lives at a donkey sanctuary in Shropshire.
Meanwhile in 2016 and 2011 two were born in China, in 2013, there was one in Italy; and in 2014, another in Mexico.
