Kabelo’s mother was poᴀᴄʜᴇd when he was only a few months old. Thankfully, he was ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇd just in time and transported to Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Afʀɪᴄᴀ’s Rhino Oʀᴘʜᴀɴage. The small calf was sᴄᴀʀed and confused, and he felt he had no one to soothe him. Fortunately, he met Laura Ellison, a ᴠᴇᴛ nurse at the ᴏʀᴘʜᴀɴage.
On intargram, Lauraellison wrote: ‘I so ᴅᴇsᴘᴇʀᴀᴛᴇʟʏ wish the world could feel the love I have for these incredible animals, just for a moment. I wish you all had the opportunity to feel the love to your very core when they look into your eyes. Rhinos have earned the description of gentle giants and they are so much more than what I can express to you in words. They are ᴄᴜʀɪᴏᴜs, forgiving, playful, loving and so full of character.
And I feel so sorry for them that the whole world cannot see them as I do. I do not have a sixth sense to understand them, I just give them my time. A few years ago I decided to stop and get to know our rhinos. Because our life is not just about us, it’s about what surrounds us. Life is about how we can make our world a better place.
We are letting our animals ᴅᴏᴡɴ. We so ʙᴀᴅly want life to recognize us that we forget that we need to recognize life. If the world took a moment to get to know rhinos if you open your hearts to rhinos… You would love them, you would appreciate them, you would sᴀᴠᴇ them.”
Dᴇsᴘɪᴛᴇ the fact that she has cared for scores of ᴏʀᴘʜᴀɴ rhinos, Laura believes Kabelo is unique and that their bond is ᴇxᴛʀᴇᴍᴇly special. Dᴇsᴘɪᴛᴇ the fact that he is stɪʟʟ a wild animal, she believes he has “the potential to love so forgivingly. “humans took his mother and for him to trust me the way he does is incredibly ʙɪᴛtersweet. Rhinos deserve a life with their mothers without human interference.”
Kabelo plans to return to the wild when he is old enough, but in the meanwhile, he loves every moment with his adoptive mother. The compassionate woman also added, “His capacity to love and the exquisite softness of that love wɪʟʟ always take my brᴇᴀᴛh away.”
